Tech Companies in Leeds: The 2026 Directory and Guide
A curated guide to Leeds tech companies in 2026 — sector by sector, with named founders, funding history and where the talent pipeline sits.
Last updated 11 May 2026

Leeds is the natural anchor of Yorkshire tech. The city hosts roughly 8,500 digital and tech firms, employs more than 34,000 people in tech roles — up from 23,734 in just a few years — and tech makes up over 7% of total employment, one of the highest concentrations in the UK. The financial-services hinterland is the second-largest in the country after London, which has bred a deep fintech cluster; the NHS estate is anchored here, which has bred a deep healthtech cluster; and the universities push out scaleable spin-outs at a steady clip. This guide maps the picture in 2026, sector by sector, with named companies and concrete numbers.
We refresh this list annually each January and update funding figures quarterly. Companies that believe they belong here can claim a profile or become a supporter to be considered for future updates.
The Leeds tech map
Most of Leeds' tech activity sits in three rough zones: Wellington Place and South Bank (Sky Betting & Gaming, ghd, Asda House); Whitehall Quay (BJSS / CGI, Sky Bet's secondary site, Burendo); and the Leeds Dock / Aire Valley creative and tech corridor (Department, smaller scaleups). Leeds Bradford Airport in Yeadon is the operational base for Jet2; Pharmacy2U operates a £3.5m automated dispensary out of nearby Leeds. Spin-outs from the University of Leeds tend to cluster at Nexus, the university's innovation hub, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2025.
iGaming, gaming and consumer tech
Leeds is the UK's heaviest iGaming city outside London. Sky Betting & Gaming employs more than 1,400 people at 2 Wellington Place and is part of Flutter UK&I. evoke plc (William Hill, 888, Mr Green) is consolidating its UK tech, retail support, trading and creative functions into a new West Village office. Rockstar Leeds — the Take-Two-owned studio in Holbeck behind GTA spin-offs and Chinatown Wars — has been a fixture for over twenty years. Consumer-tech maker ghd was founded in Leeds in 2001 and pulls roughly £199m a year in revenue from its Wellington Place HQ.
TravelTech and consumer platforms
Jet2.com is the UK's largest tour operator and a FTSE 250 constituent. Its booking and operations platforms are built in Leeds; Leeds Bradford Airport is the operational base. Asda — Walmart-built mission-control and tech function for Asda.com and George.com — runs from Asda House on the South Bank. Pharmacy2U, the UK's largest digital pharmacy, dispatches roughly 1.6m items per month from a £3.5m automated dispensary in Leeds.
HealthTech and clinical software
Leeds is a national-grade healthtech city. TPP — The Phoenix Partnership — based in Horsforth — built SystmOne, used by 6,000+ NHS organisations covering more than 50 million patients. The Leeds-Bradford healthtech ecosystem comprises around 144 firms with combined turnover near £1.6bn, per Health Innovation Leeds.
Faster-moving healthtech scaleups include Vet-AI (Joii Pet Care — AI-driven pet telemedicine partnered with major UK insurers), adsilico (a Leeds-Uni spin-out building in-silico clinical trials with virtual heart populations; £3.5m seed in 2024) and Pharmacy2U on the consumer side.
FinTech: the deepest regional cluster outside London
Leeds is the UK's strongest regional FinTech hub outside London. The Whitecap North of England FinTech Report 2025 finds 87+ FinTech firms across the city region, with around one in five Leeds jobs sitting in financial technology. The cluster has grown organically over more than two decades, anchored by the city's status as the second-largest UK financial centre — itself a function of Leeds being the largest legal, accountancy and insurance market north of London since the early 2000s.
TransUnion International UK — formerly Callcredit, acquired by TransUnion for £1bn in 2018 — is the UK's number-two credit bureau, headquartered at One Park Lane in Leeds with around 1,000 staff. The 2018 acquisition is itself a useful proof point: Callcredit was a Leeds-grown business that Atlanta-headquartered TransUnion paid £1bn to add to its global infrastructure, retaining the Leeds engineering function rather than moving it.
Equiniti Credit Services's Northern Tech Hub at Lawnswood manages over £20bn of credit assets — a single fintech function bigger than many UK fintech companies in their entirety. Mutuals Leeds Building Society (UK fifth-largest) and Yorkshire Building Society (UK third-largest, headquartered in nearby Bradford) run substantial in-house digital teams. Together the four organisations form the regulated-fintech backbone of the city.
Smaller specialist scaleups and cluster-coordinating bodies make up the rest. The FinTech North industry body coordinates the cluster, runs the Leeds FinTech Conference and the Pitch360 programme. Answer Pay (Request to Pay) is one of several smaller Leeds fintechs working in payments-infrastructure adjacency to the bigger regulated players. The 87+ firm count understates the activity if you include consultancies, services firms and embedded fintech functions inside non-fintech businesses (e.g. Asda's payments engineering or Pharmacy2U's healthcare-payments integration).
The cluster's distinguishing feature versus London fintech: the regulatory and core-banking work is closer to the centre of gravity than the consumer-app layer. Leeds fintech engineers know more about FCA filings, AML pipelines and core-banking platforms than they know about challenger-bank UX — which makes them disproportionately valuable for regulated-fintech founders building infrastructure-grade products.
B2B SaaS, consultancy and digital services
BJSS was founded in Leeds in 1993, grew into one of the UK's largest tech consultancies, and was acquired by CGI in 2024. Its Whitehall Quay HQ remains a major Leeds employer. Hippo Digital runs a roughly 500-strong service-design and delivery consultancy serving the NHS, DWP, MoJ and DfE. Burendo won Tech Team of the Year at the Leeds Digital Festival 2024 with UKHSA. Answer Digital is an employee-owned digital, AI and data consultancy serving regulated industries.
On the product side, Panintelligence (Yeadon, Leeds) builds embedded analytics and BI for SaaS companies, with a Boston office. Northcoders is the AIM-listed software-training group with a permanent Leeds base.
Cybersecurity and quantum
Pentest People provides NCSC CHECK-accredited pen-testing-as-a-service to around 1,200 clients; acquired by GRC Group in September 2024. Cavero Quantum is a University of Leeds spin-out building quantum-safe key generation; £2.2m growth in 2024. Smoothwall's school-filtering and digital-safeguarding platform was acquired in 2021 by ASX-listed Qoria for £75.5m and continues to operate from Leeds.
Deep tech and university spin-outs
University of Leeds spin-outs increasingly punch above their weight. Tracsis is the AIM-listed rail and traffic-data SaaS company that started life as a University of Leeds Computing department spin-out. More recent: Slingshot Simulations (no-code digital twins; built the Digital Twin of Leeds; £3m round 2023), MicroLub (FoodTech protein-and-water scaffolds replacing fats up to 75%; £3.5m seed 2024) and Cavero Quantum (already mentioned). The University of Leeds counts 47 spin-outs since 2011, and 2024 figures show 1,400+ employees, £137m turnover and £51m raised across the active portfolio.
Infrastructure
aql operates carrier-neutral data centres (DC2, DC3, DC5) in Leeds, hosts IXLeeds — the city's internet exchange — and provides AI-ready HPC infrastructure for telecoms, IoT and enterprise customers. The Leeds data-centre cluster is one of the strongest outside London-South-East.
The Leeds investor scene
Leeds founders raise from a stack that runs from microfinance to growth equity. The largest pot is the £660m Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II — its £100m Yorkshire & Humber equity mandate (cheques up to £5m) is managed by Mercia Ventures; the £53m Yorkshire & Humber debt mandate (£100k-£2m) is managed by Mercia Business Loans. Smaller loans (£25k-£100k) come from Bradford-based BEF.
Leeds-headquartered VCs and PE houses include YFM Equity Partners (£3m-£15m, growth equity), Endless LLP (special situations and growth, Enact £100m + Endless £400m funds), Key Capital Partners (growth PE in tech, healthcare and B2B services; £2m-£10m). BGF operates from a Leeds office at Platform and deployed £40m+ into Yorkshire and the North East in 2024 alone, including £13.75m into a Leeds AV/event-tech firm in 2025. Foresight Group runs the £20m West Yorkshire SME Investment Fund mandated by WYCA.
For deep-tech and university-IP plays, Northern Gritstone is the dominant force — £382m of permanent capital after its April 2025 close, 50+ investments to date including Leeds spin-outs Slingshot Simulations and LC AuxeTec. The June 2025 launch of the Northern Universities Venture Fund with Parkwalk added an EIS-eligible vehicle aimed at the same beat.
On the angel side, Leeds-headquartered NorthInvest has facilitated more than £41m of investment through a network of around 90 active angels — backers of Holly Health, Power Roll and FourJaw among others. The UKBAA Leeds Angel Hub, powered by Investor Ladder, runs regular pitch nights with co-investment from other syndicates. For the funding stack in full, see our Yorkshire funding guide.
Data, analytics and AI
Leeds has a quietly significant data-and-analytics cluster anchored by Panintelligence's embedded-BI platform, Vet-AI's applied-AI work for the veterinary insurance market, adsilico's in-silico clinical-trial platform (a University of Leeds spin-out using virtual heart populations), and Slingshot Simulations's Compass Engine for digital-twin simulation. The Digital Twin of Leeds project — a collaboration between the city council and Slingshot — is one of the more ambitious municipal-scale digital-twin programmes in the UK.
On the infrastructure side, aql's data-centre cluster increasingly hosts AI-grade GPU capacity for regional customers, lowering the practical barrier for any Leeds-based AI-product company that needs HPC capacity without committing to AWS or Azure. The University of Leeds also operates a major HPC facility used heavily by computer-science and physics research groups; spin-out access is brokered through Nexus.
Working in tech in Leeds
Median IT salary in Yorkshire & Humber sits around £37,700 versus £58,000-£67,500 for software-engineering roles in London — a £20,000-£30,000 per-head differential before any cost-of-living adjustment. CompTIA's State of the Tech Workforce UK 2025 puts Leeds among the highest-density tech-employment cities in the country, with tech making up over 7% of total employment.
The talent pipeline is strong: the University of Leeds has the 14th-ranked computer-science department in the UK; Leeds Beckett, Leeds Trinity and Leeds Arts University all feed engineering, design and product roles. The LNER hour to London means recruiting senior people who occasionally want to be in Soho or Shoreditch is workable. Reverse commutes from London are increasingly common as remote-first companies hire across the M62 corridor.
