Universities Have Always Produced Knowledge. Increasingly, they’re expected to produce companies.

For generations, the relationship between universities and the economy followed a familiar pattern.
Universities educated students, advanced research and published discoveries. Businesses, meanwhile, took that knowledge, invested capital and transformed ideas into products, services and industries. The two worlds depended upon one another, but they remained largely distinct.
That distinction is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
Across much of Britain, universities are being asked to play a different role. They are no longer judged solely by the quality of their research or the achievements of their graduates. They are increasingly expected to contribute more directly to economic growth, supporting startups alongside scientific papers and founders alongside academics.
It is a subtle shift in expectation, but one with profound implications.
In recent years, the conversation around university spinouts has gathered pace. New investment funds have been established to support commercialisation, technology transfer offices have become more sophisticated, and investors specialising in university spinouts have become increasingly active. Researchers are receiving greater encouragement to explore entrepreneurship, while investors are spending more time inside universities searching for the next generation of high-growth companies.
The assumption behind this activity is clear.
Britain possesses extraordinary research capability.
The longstanding challenge has been to turn a larger share of those ideas into globally competitive businesses.
For the North of England, that challenge carries particular significance.
Few regions in Europe possess such a concentration of research-intensive universities. Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool, Lancaster, York, Durham and others collectively produce internationally recognised work across artificial intelligence, advanced materials, engineering, medicine, energy, digital technologies and life sciences, though strengths vary by institution and field. Their influence extends far beyond lecture theatres and laboratories.
The question is whether that influence is becoming sufficiently visible in the economy that surrounds them.
Historically, some promising technologies developed within British universities have found commercial success elsewhere. Some have been licensed to established multinational companies. Others have become startups that eventually relocated closer to investors or larger commercial networks. In many cases, the economic value created by research has travelled further than the research itself.
There are signs that this pattern is beginning to change.
Universities have become more ambitious about supporting founders through the earliest stages of company creation. Dedicated incubators have expanded. Entrepreneurial education has become more common. Investors specialising in university spinouts have become increasingly active, recognising that some of Britain’s most valuable technology companies originated not in garages or co-working spaces but in research laboratories.
This reflects a broader change in how innovation happens.
Scientific discovery is rarely enough on its own. Successful commercialisation requires experienced leadership, patient capital, legal expertise, regulatory understanding and access to customers. Building companies from research has become a collaborative process involving universities, investors, local authorities and established businesses working together rather than operating independently.
In many respects, that collaboration is where the North can claim a comparative advantage.
The distances between universities, manufacturers, hospitals and technology businesses are often measured in miles rather than hundreds of miles. Research partnerships emerge naturally because institutions have worked together for decades. Graduates frequently remain within the region, joining local employers before becoming founders themselves. Industrial capability provides practical environments in which new technologies can be tested and refined rather than simply demonstrated.
These are conditions that cannot easily be replicated.
Yet they are not always recognised as strategic assets.
Too often, discussion about university spinouts focuses on individual success stories: the funding round, the breakthrough technology, the acquisition or the valuation. These milestones matter, but they can obscure the more important question.
What kind of economy is being built?
The strongest innovation ecosystems are not those that produce the occasional spectacular company. They are those that repeatedly transform research into businesses, businesses into employers and employers into experienced founders who begin the cycle again.
That process takes decades.
It depends as much upon culture as capital.
Universities become successful entrepreneurial institutions not because they produce one exceptional company, but because they create environments where commercial ambition is viewed as a natural extension of academic excellence rather than a departure from it.
The North appears to be moving steadily in that direction.
Government policy increasingly recognises universities as anchors of regional growth. Investors are establishing funds dedicated to university commercialisation. Civic leaders are placing innovation at the centre of economic strategy rather than treating it as a specialist concern.
The pieces are beginning to align.
The challenge now is not whether Northern universities can generate world-class research.
They have demonstrated that for generations.
The challenge is whether the region can build the connective infrastructure that allows more of that research to become globally significant businesses without leaving the places where those ideas were born.
If that happens, the university of the future will be judged by more than the papers it publishes or the students it graduates.
It will also be judged by the companies it helps create, the industries it strengthens and the prosperity it leaves behind.
Knowledge will remain its foundation.
But increasingly, commercial impact may become part of its legacy.
